The Cub Scouts of Pack 226 will present 94 coats to homeless adults and children living in shelters and on the streets of our city. The Pack's first service project, titled "Cub Scouts Care" was a two-part initiative. The first effort involved the boys and their families collecting gently-used coats, jackets and blankets from their homes, friends and neighbors to donate to The Atlanta day Shelter for Women and Children. The second component involved the sacrificial giving of newly-purchased hats, gloves, scarves and mittens for children enrolled in the Atlanta Children's Shelter. That facility provides free daycare for children between the ages of one month and five years while their homeless parents go to work each day.
During the November pack meeting, the boys sorted, boxed and labeled the donations before praying for the recipients. Each Scout wrote a short note of encouragement and a reminder of Jesus' love to accompany the donations. The Pack is grateful to all the families who collected and purchased items. And we truly appreciate Bear Mom Carol Lewis, who organized our effort and the cadre of mothers who volunteered to drive the items to the shelters.
Total donations to people living on Atlanta's streets included: 37 men's coats, 27 women's coats, 25 children's coats, 19 blankets, socks, gloves and hats. The infants and children at the daycare center will receive all newly-purchased winter wear that includes 5 jackets, 64 pairs of gloves, 47 hats, socks, scarves and earmuffs. The bounty, prayers and volunteerism truly show that God blesses, Jesus loves and Cub Scouts care.
We have three new chairs for Pack 226's exciting events in 2010. Curtis Newman will serve as this year?s Pinewood Derby chairman. He will be providing you with details about the January 23 race, rules for constructing the entries and opportunities to volunteer as we get closer to the big event. Your sons will receive their derby kits in early December so that they can work on them during the Christmas break.
The mothers of two new Scouts are co-chairing our annual Blue and Gold Banquet, which will be Saturday, February 27, at 5 pm. Wyndi Griggers and Mickey Wade are planning a fun evening of fellowship that will mark the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in America.
Our pack has had some memorable experiences at the Bert Adams Boy Scout Reservation in Covington, but we are planning to head out into new territory. On April 9, we will explore one of Georgia's primitive campsites for a 2-day wilderness stay. The adventure will include outdoor cooking lessons for all dens, hiking, fishing and special recognition ceremonies for all who participate. Save the dates, April 9 to April 11, and expect to receive additional details in January.
Your sons will have an opportunity to complete three service projects this year. Our first project involves a winter coat and blanket giveaway to help the city's homeless population. During our November 17th pack meeting, we will package our donated items and pray for the recipients. In February, the boys will have a chance to help children ages 1 to 5 assemble Valentine's gifts for their parents. On February 12, we will travel to the Women's and Children's Shelter with craft materials, scented soaps, men's shaving gel and flowers so children can select items for their parents. During March, Pack 226 will participate in the nationwide "Scouting For Food" event to help stock local food banks.
The Pack Committee of 226 is comprised of the liaison (Mr. Jim Heiskell) of our chartering organization, our cubmaster, assistant cubmaster, den leaders, the pack?s training coordinator and any parents interested in helping to establish program events.
It meets on the second Tuesday of each month to plan the monthly Pack meeting, make budget allocations, decide on outdoor activities, coordinate service projects, discuss training opportunities, develop plans for recognition ceremonies and disseminate information from the district or national level of Boy Scouts of America.
